(See Proverbs 3:5–7.) Courtship is a choice to avoid temptation and experience the blessings of purity.
They can be anything from the thing your fifth-grade sister has in between classes with the boy at the next locker over and the intense sexual experience you're having with the guy you met on Tinder. Your best friend is probably in a “relationship” with a guy who's in another four. Anyone can own a number, have a few experiences and call it a romance.
Not everyone, however, can be part of something completely and utterly dependent of itself.
I don't want to date more than one guy at a time, but I might not want to marry that one guy, either. These terms are often used interchangeably, depending on which one the person feels most comfortable using. You never hear a non-Christian use this term at any time.
So courtship, just as a term, has meaning and value to a Christian.
What is the difference between courtship and dating?
Is the only difference that dating is casual and courtship is exclusive with movement towards engagement? The path to popularity requires that we constantly perform. They like hanging out with us even when we’re not happy. “Lovers are always talking to one another about their love; Friends hardly ever about their Friendship. The very condition of having Friends is that we should want something else besides Friends…They don’t care if we’re smart, talented, athletic, or musical. Lovers are normally face to face, absorbed in each other; Friends, side by side, absorbed in some common interest” The key then is not to set out to focus on the friendship, but to focus on what unites you as friends. Friendship must be about something, even if it were only an enthusiasm for dominoes or white mice. However, among Christians, you still hear “courtship” and “dating” used interchangeably; indicating that many single people find the terms to mean the same thing. Why would anyone use the term “courtship” when they are simply “dating”? Some Christians find the word “dating” to be a negative term due to their secular counterparts using the term excessively. Not everyone can find something more stable than the people inside it. I like to look at relationships as the building blocks to partnerships.
